Weekly house cleaning checklist

Organized cleaning supplies laid out on a kitchen counter

A consistent weekly cleaning routine stops mess from building up and means your home is always company-ready. It also makes each clean shorter, when you stay on top of it, you are never battling weeks of grime.

Below is a room-by-room checklist you can work through in about 90 minutes. Adjust the order to suit your home, most people find starting from the top floor and working down keeps dust and debris moving in one direction.

Kitchen

  • Wipe down all bench and counter surfaces
  • Clean stovetop grates and burner covers
  • Wipe exterior of microwave, fridge, and oven
  • Clean inside microwave (splatter and odours)
  • Wipe cabinet fronts and handles
  • Empty, rinse, and reline the bin
  • Mop or sweep floor; mop if tiled
  • Wipe sink and tap, polish chrome

Bathrooms

  • Scrub toilet bowl, wipe seat, lid, and base
  • Clean sink basin and tap; remove toothpaste splatter
  • Scrub shower walls, screen, and floor
  • Wipe mirror and glass surfaces streak-free
  • Replace towels with clean ones
  • Empty bin and reline
  • Mop floor and behind toilet

Living room and dining area

  • Dust surfaces, shelves, and decorative items
  • Wipe TV screen and remote controls
  • Plump and straighten cushions
  • Vacuum sofas and under seat cushions
  • Vacuum carpet or rugs; mop hard floors
  • Wipe dining table and chairs
  • Remove clutter to designated storage

Bedrooms

  • Change bed linen (weekly or fortnightly)
  • Dust bedside tables, lamps, and top of wardrobe
  • Wipe mirrors and glass
  • Vacuum floor and under the bed
  • Clear floor of clothes and shoes to storage

Shared spaces and hallways

  • Dust light switches and door handles
  • Vacuum or sweep staircases and hallways
  • Wipe skirting boards (fortnightly is fine)
  • Clean front door glass and handle

Tips to make the routine stick

Batch your tasks by type, not by room. Carrying the same tool (vacuum, mop, spray bottle) through every room before switching is faster than completing one room at a time.
Do a 10-minute reset the night before. Return items to their homes, load the dishwasher, and put clothes away. The weekly clean then only covers actual cleaning, not tidying.
Stock a caddy for each floor. Having a spray bottle, microfibre cloths, and a scrubbing brush on every level cuts the time spent fetching supplies.
Delegate by room, not by task. If you clean with a partner or family, assigning whole rooms reduces coordination overhead.

When to call in the professionals

A weekly routine keeps everyday buildup under control, but some tasks need specialist equipment or deeper effort:

  • Oven interior, range hood filters, and grease traps
  • Carpet steam cleaning (every 6–12 months)
  • Upholstery and mattress cleaning
  • High windows, ceiling fans, and exhaust vents
  • Full seasonal deep clean before or after a busy period
